We decided that today would be a good day to get our garden started. We had such success last year that we wanted expand it a little. Jake rented a tiller this morning and tilled up 5 rows next to the raised bed from last year. Our wonderful (but often surly [haha]) cousin gave us used molasses block containers to use for planting the tomatoes.
After the new rows were tilled, we headed to town to return the tiller, eat lunch, and purchase our veggies. It took a while because we ended up going by one place for plants and another for potting soil.
We returned home and got busy getting dirty! In the six molasses tubs are: strawberries, bell pepper, regular tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes. Planted in the rows are: watermelon, ambrosia melons, zucchini, and squash. In the raised bed are: sweet peppers and one left over tomato plant. We are planning on planting butter beans and eggplant as well. I also bought a butterfly bush and planted it outside the kitchen window.
Before we could plant in the raised bed, we had to weed it a bit and pull up mustard, collard, and turnip greens Pop and Jake planted a month or so ago. Grace was so excited to see the turnip bottoms when she pulled the plants. She would pull a plant and look at it carefully then inform us whether it was a mustard or turnip green.
I can't wait to see how the garden grows this year!
These are roses from three of five rose bushes Jake got me for our second Valentine's Day.
